Creating a Sub-Domain in Another Web Server

When using CPANEL, the creation of sub-domains is very simple. The limitation of this process however is that the location of the sub-domain need to be on the same web server as the domain itself. What if you want to host the sub-domain in another web server, how are you going to do that?

The solution is to create the sub-domain in your domain registrar then point it to the web server to which you want to host your domain. If your registrar is GoDaddy, follow these steps:

  1. Log into your GoDaddy account
  2. Select your domain (if you have several) then go to Domain Manager
  3. Click Name Server Manage
  4. GoDaddy Domain Manager

    GoDaddy Domain Manager

  5. Select the "I have a hosting account with these domains, then click OK
  6. GoDaddy Set Name Server

    GoDaddy Set Name Server

  7. It will take a few minutes before the Total DNS Control link will be active. Once activated, click the link and enter your sub-domain under the "Host Name" text box then the IP address of the web server where you want to host the sub domain.
  8. A Record Setup

  9. From above, the host name is "s" pointing to "207.218.248.76", then click OK. The complete sub-domain name will be "s.pangonilo.com".
  10. A Record

  11. The final A Record will be similar to the one above
  12. In your propose web server for your sub-domain, create a domain name using the sub-domain name you have just created in your domain registrar.
  13. It may take several hours before your sub-domain will become accessible

If you are using a registrar other than GoDaddy, the steps may be different or simpler.

  1. Log into you domain account
  2. Go to your domain control panel
  3. Manage DNS Zone
  4. Click the "Manage DNS Zone" link
  5. DNS Zone Records
  6. Click Add Record link then enter your sub-domain into the host name and the web server IP address into the "Points to" text box.
  7. In your propose web server for your sub-domain, create a domain name using the sub-domain name you have just created in your domain registrar.
  8. It may take several hours before your sub-domain will become accessible

Disclaimer: I have been using these steps for my domains and it is working. I am not providing guarantee that it may be applicable to everyone.
